Travelling through Australia

Citytrip Sydney

With barely any intercontinental travel experience, we take on our biggest adventure so far and fly to the other side of the world to discover all the special things Down Under has to offer us. In October and November 2019, we travelled for two months through Australia and New Zealand. After a stopover in Singapore, our journey along the Australian east coast starts in Cairns in early October and will end in Sydney 4 weeks later, after which we continued our journey in New Zealand. Below is an overview of all the destinations we visited during this trip.

Cairns

Travel to Cairns

Cairns has been our base for three days for day trips to the Great Barrier Reef and the rainforest at Cape Tribulation. These were unforgettable experiences in the Australian nature. An emu, snake, cassowary, clown fish (Nemo), crocodiles and countless other types of fish are just a few of the wild animals we have seen in the beautiful nature reserves around Cairns.

Five stars

Magnetic Island

Travel to Magnetic Island

Admittedly, you mainly visit Townsville because of the nearby located Magnetic Island. An amazing island with rock wallabies and wild koalas in the trees along the Fort Walk. In addition, Koala Village is located on the island, where you can literally meet the Australian native animals. In the centre of Townsville you should definitely climb Castle Hill for a top view!

Five stars

Whitsunday Islands

Travel to Whitsunday Islands

For many travellers, the Whitsundays are the highlight of their trip along Australia's east coast. Not without reason, because the islands are beautiful with Whitehaven Beach as the absolute highlight. The combination of extremely white sandy beach and the transparent turquoise sea water makes this one of the most beautiful beaches on earth. Too beautiful to describe.

Fraser Island

Travel to Fraser Island

Fraser Island is not only the largest sand island in the world, it is also a very diverse nature reserve with beautiful lakes, dingoes and the shipwreck S.S. Maheno. It is an adventurous experience to drive across the island with a 4WD vehicle. We ended our day trip on Fraser Island with a short flight over this special island.

Five stars

Noosa

Travel to Noosa

Noosa National Park offers multiple options for walks along the coastline of Noosa. During these hikes you can spot dolphins & koalas and enjoy the green surroundings. The beautiful sea view is always right next to you. Noosa Main Beach offers attractive options for sunbathing and surfing, and also includes a nice boulevard. Nice place!

Four stars

Brisbane

Travel to Brisbane

Brizzy, as the locals say, is a hip town with a vibrant urban area called South Bank. Here you can find a large lagoon located next to the river, where you can relax after a day in the busy city centre. It's a shame that many people skip Brisbane on their trip along Australia's east coast as it has plenty nice things to offer to stay here for a few days.

Four stars

Gold Coast

Travel to Gold Coast

The comparison with Miami Beach is made for a reason. Gold Coast has a 70 km long beach with excellent circumstances for surfing. We have experienced ourselves how great surfing is at Surfers Paradise. Furthermore, Gold Coast is full of entertainment: nightclubs, casinos and amusement parks make this a lively coastal town. A luxurious sun destination with many opportunities.

Four stars

Byron Bay

Travel to Byron Bay

An endlessly long bay and no less than thirty kilometers of golden beaches: the relaxed ‘hippie’ village of Byron Bay is a popular surf spot where you can also kayak among the dolphins. Due to the strong wind we were unable to do this activity, which influenced our experience at this destination. However, we did enjoy the hike to the famous Cape Byron lighthouse.

Three stars

Sydney

Travel to Sydney

When you think of Australia, you probably immediately think of Sydney and its iconic harbor with the Opera House and the Harbor Bridge. Sydney also has a lot to offer in terms of culture. Furthermore, the metropolis of Oceania holds a diversity of city districts and many nice parks. The Sydney vibe is simply so good, you'll want to stay there for at least a week.

Around the Australian east coast

Diving Great Barrier Reef

beautiful beaches, rainforests and impressive coastal cities. It is understandable why this part of Australia is so popular among backpackers. In four weeks, we enjoyed all the great things the Australian east coast has to offer. In Cairns we dived and snorkelled in the largest and most appealing coral reef in the world.

In Townsville we literally climbed to a great height during the hike to Castle Hill, and on Magnetic Island we came into contact with the Australian native animals: wild wallabies, snake, parrot and we hugged a koala!

Sydney Opera House

The Whitsunday Islands day trips showed us the beautiful archipelago off Airlie Beach with the absolute highlight being the dreamy Whitehaven Beach. On Fraser Island we drove a 4WD bus over the bumpy sand roads and we made a scenic flight over the largest sand island in the world (with take-off and landing on the beach!).

Noosa was the setting for the Coastal Walk with its impressive rocky coast. In the metropolis of Brisbane we used the opportunity to relax at the lagoon in South Bank. Gold Coast is the place where we practiced our first surfing skills at the famous Surfers Paradise beach.

We will remember the enjoyable hike to the famous Cape Byron lighthouse and the most easterly point of Australia at the small town of Byron Bay. In Sydney we were able to conclude our tour of Australia, a great metropolis with worldwide icons that we have visited: Harbour Bridge and a tour at the Sydney Opera House.

Australia: a tourist-friendly country

We have come to know Australia as a very tourist-friendly country. We have noticed that the people here have a strong bond with the ancient nature in which the current inhabitants have only lived for a few centuries until now. Tourism is an important source of income for Australia and the Australians really welcome tourists with open arms. On the east coast people are enthusiastic, open and friendly towards travellers, while at the same time the necessary dose of humour and self-mockery are also not lacking. Tessa had slipped at the second destination on Magnetic Island, which left her wearing a giant white band-aid for the following weeks. Naturally, this attracted a lot of attention, so we have lost count of how often Tessa has been approached by concerned residents about this. The wound thus formed a perfect icebreaker for long spontaneous conversations.

We could write many books about it, but a picture is worth a thousand words. Are you visiting the east coast of Australia soon? Then take a look at our photo albums of the nine Australian destinations we have visited. Be curious, get inspired and admire the beautiful nature and great coastal cities that Australia has to offer.

Traveling along the Australian east coast

Surfing at Gold Coast

The Australian west coast or New Zealand is very suited for campers, and the Australian east coast is great for backpackers. The east coast is a very popular route for young travellers, so you will find affordable (youth) hostels everywhere that are of excellent quality: clean and with good facilities.

Like most young backpackers, we travelled with the Greyhound bus along the Australian east coast. We found it a pleasant experience to travel with this bus, because you can choose when you travel and where you get off. Per destination there are usually two or three departure times per day, so you can quite freely determine when you want to travel.

We had bought a ''30 Day Whimit Pass'' from Kilroy for $400 which allowed us unlimited travel from Cairns to Sydney. All we had to do was to reserve the seats online for the bus that we wanted to take.

What characterizes Australia?

Sydney Opera House

Australia is almost as big as the United States, but with a population of 25 million, it has less than 8% of the American population. As a result, Australia is very spacious and the cities are not overcrowded. The smaller towns we have visited didn’t have any tall buildings, making these small towns reminiscent of American Western villages. The big cities are also somewhat like American cities in terms of architecture and infrastructure. Think of the modern street scene with skyscrapers and the square road construction. Australian cuisine does not really exist, this is a mixture of European, American and Asian food. What is unique is the flat Australian accent, the 'how are you doing mate?' and 'good bananas' phrases are hard to miss.

Australian nature: diversity and unique animal species

Due to its remote location, special native animals have emerged in Australia that only occur on this island, such as kangaroos, emus, wombats and koalas. These animals have coexisted with the Aborigines, who have inhabited Australia for 60,000 years, but some typical Australian animals have struggled since the arrival of Europeans in the late 18th century. The pets and other animals brought by Europeans cause a lot of damage to the native flora and fauna. In recent years, climate change resulting in forest fires and warmer sea water has also increased the problems for animals such as koalas and marine animals at the Great Barrier Reef.

Nevertheless, the diverse nature of Australia still has a lot to offer. In the north you will find ancient rainforests, in the east you will find the Great Barrier Reef and some charming coastal cities with beautiful beaches, the great ocean road is located at the south coast and the west coast is known for its many national parks, deserts and (quiet) beaches. In the middle is the warm outback where you can drive for hours without meeting people until you reach the famous red Uluru mountain near Alice Springs. This diversity in the landscape makes Australia a special holiday destination that you will simply have to visit more often if you want to experience all the highlights.

Forest fires Australia

With the dry and warm climate, it is not surprising that there are many forest fires in Australia in the summer. Forest fires can cause major problems, especially at the natural areas of the south and east coast. We travelled along the Australian east coast in October 2019 when it was spring season and summer was just around the corner. We spent our last day in Australia in the Blue Mountains, the large national park near Sydney. Here we first noticed the effects of forest fires in the area that created a smoke haze around the Three Sisters (see photo below). A few weeks later (when we were in New Zealand) the wildfires of the Australian east coast hit the international news. The fires had increased enormously in a short time with dramatic consequences for air quality, plants and animals.

Although the fires are not every year as huge and devastating as in 2019, due to climate change the likelihood that the presence and size of forest fires will increase over the years is fairly high. Therefore, it is a good idea to take this into account when planning your trip to Australian destinations at the east coast or south coast. If we had gone to Sydney one or two months later, we would have had a completely different city trip without beautiful views, with dramatic air quality and insanely high temperatures. In short, from November to March forest fires in Australia can have a significant impact on your travel plans.
